April 12, 1961. It was a Wednesday. Turned 27 years three days before. After several hours he would enter history as the first man to reach Earth orbit. This modest and sociable man called Yuri Gagarin, and this year would have turned 77 years old. The Kremlin is talking since 1946 about the possibility of sending a man into space. Plans began to be realized only after 13 years in 1959, with recruitment from among fighter pilots, of future cosmonauts. By March 1960, after a series of assessments, 20 people were elected.

In 1961, six of them were selected to be part of the Vostok team. Three of them - Yuri Gagarin, Gherman Titov and Grigory Neliubov - were considered the best and "final" was "played" between Gagarin and Titov, the result was announced just 48 hours before launch. "I learned very well the technical equipment. We've trained very hard to learn how the body reacts to different factors in space flight: vibration, overload, weightlessness, "said Gagarin, according to the site ruvr.ru about training extremely hard stages of pre-flight .
Meanwhile, at Baikonur, three press releases were prepared to announce the first flight of a man in orbit. Press is called "Success" (if the mission proved successful), "Appeal to the governments of other countries" (where the capsule is cosmonaut aboard which had fallen in a foreign state or international waters) and "Tragic "(where Yuri Gagarin returned is no longer alive), Voice of Russia informs on its website.
"Let's go," said Gagarin a few seconds before setting off on 12 April. At 9:07 local time, a Vostok rocket of 287 tons was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. "Baptism's Vostok had taken place a year before - in 1960 when, having on board the famous dogs Belka and Strelka, the rocket carried a few hours in space mission and returned in good condition. This time, the Vostok was a much more ambitious mission - had been attached to a capsule that carried him into orbit on Gagarin. 4.4 meters long capsule consisted of two components - a spherical cabin, with a diameter of 2.5 meters, and a support mode as they were, inter alia, radio and film to convey to the center ground control in real-time images and data on the state of cosmonauts. Gagarin had no control over the board controls, the shuttle is fully controlled from the ground. There was, however, the capsule, a sealed envelope that would have allowed him on the site, in case of extreme urgency, the necessary operations to find the combination of acquisition of control.
The engines were packed and creepy noise preceded the boom-carrier rocket. From Gagarin's helmet first words were heard after the launch: "I feel overload, vibration, support all normal." Then write ruvr.ru, and his tone changed: "predominant emotions - joy, excitement." As the ship away from Earth, cosmonaut increasingly externalize their feelings. Enjoyed as a child when he saw the window, snow, forest, topography of the Earth. Seconds had elapsed.
The secret training mission that has enveloped humanity was revealed only after 52 minutes after launch. At 9:59 pm Moscow time, was made public the following statement: "the world's first spacecraft, Vostok, with a man on board was launched into orbit from the USSR on 12 April 1961. The pilot and navigator Vostok is a citizen of the USSR, Major Yuri Gagarin Aviation. Space rocket launch was successful and, after reaching speeds of about 27,000 kilometers per hour (required to reach Earth orbit, nn) separation was performed on the last step of the carrier rocket and the spacecraft went into free flight Earth orbit. According to preliminary information, the period of revolution around the Earth ship is 89.1 minutes. Minimum distance from Earth to perigee is 175 km and maximum height up to 302 km and inclination of the orbit to the equator plane of 65 degrees and four minutes. The spacecraft weighs 4725 kilograms, excluding the weight of the rocket carrier.
Vostok flew around the Earth for about 90 minutes. At 10:25, Moscow time, the vessel was above Africa. At that time concerns were raised about the official was not speaking for more than four decades. According ruvr.ru, not descent module separated from the module with equipment for both board and started to approach the ground with amazing speed. Shuttle's external temperature increased so much iNCAT burned cables and modules have been separated, thus avoiding a catastrophe. Gagarin had landed with the parachute, and not inside the capsule, as he himself confessed in his book, "The road to space". It landed at 10:55, about 400 kilometers from the center location originally calculated the ground, writes journalist Anton Pervuşin in the book "108 minutes that changed the world." Smelovka was dropped near the village of Saratov region, the eyes of a peasant and his daughter, according ruvr.ru. They turned to Gagarin, but they stopped being troubled by the unusual appearance of man in the orange suit diving. "I started to shake their hands and cry of yours are not afraid of me, come here," he said cosmonaut.
Alexeievici Yuri Gagarin was born on 9 March 1934 in a family of common people and educated. He became a national hero at the age of 27 years and then all image has become bargaining chips for propaganda purposes, for the Soviet Union. On 14 April 1961, a crowd gathered in front of the mausoleum in Moscow to cheer on their hero. Climbed to the rostrum, Gagarin told: "I want to wholeheartedly thank the scientists, engineers, technicians, workers who built the Soviet vessel on board which can be found the mysteries of outer space. I am convinced that all my friends, pilots cosmonauts are also ready at any moment to make a flight around our planet. "
Later, when he wrote "The road to space", Iura, as he was called close, confessed: "When I look at my daughter's face I do not see what I see other fathers - I do not see myself or my wife. I see only the cosmos. " Gagarin was named Hero of the USSR, Hero of Labor in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Vietnam, honorary member of the International Academy of Astronautics, an honorary citizen of many cities in the world. He was awarded the Gold Medal in Austria, Italy, Sweden, Britain and France. After the legendary flight, he became director of the Center for training cosmonauts.
He died on 27 March 1968 during a training flight in a MIG-15, according to the official version. He was buried in Red Square in Moscow.
