Etna has been revived to life by an eruption with pyroclastic flows, lava flows and emanations leaking gas and ash. Ash released into the atmosphere has led authorities to close Fontanarossa airport in Catania, which led to the cancellation of racing. The airport was reopened Thursday.

Eruption lasted about two hours on Wednesday night into Thursday, lava flowing on the western slope of the mountain, without casualties recorded, the volcanology institute said in Catania (eastern Sicily).
