Electricity, water and gas were stopped in the city, international airport was closed, as well as railway traffic. The government decreed a state of emergency in the region and urged people to use mobile phones only for emergencies. Rescuers continue to pull the wounded from under the ruins of many buildings destroyed.
Prime Minister announced the creation of a crisis to manage the situation, and the mayor said the city life will never be the same after this earthquake. At least 65 people have died in the earthquake recorded in New Zealand Tuesday, announced Prime Minister John Key was quoted by the website of TV channel TVNZ. "It is possible to witness the darkest days of New Zealand," said Key. "It is a municipality in total agony.
